Overview

A dashboard is a saved arrangement of widgets. This guide covers everything you do with a dashboard as a whole: finding and opening one, creating one from ready-made template widgets, arranging the grid, filtering every widget at once, filtering a single widget, setting a default, changing who can see it, and moving it between environments with export and import.

Prerequisites

• At least one integration connected with data collected. Until Interno holds data, the Dashboard page sends you to Admin → Integrations instead.
• The permissions below. Each control appears only if you hold the permission that goes with it.

Who Can See a Dashboard

Every dashboard is either private or public.

In lists, a padlock-style icon with the tooltip Private Dashboard or a globe icon with the tooltip Public Dashboard shows the type. Dashboards that ZIN built carry a ZIN icon with the tooltip Zin Generated.

The Dashboard Page

Navigation: Sidebar → Dashboard

The bar across the top of the page holds four controls.

What opens first

When you arrive on the page with no dashboard chosen, Interno opens your default dashboard. If you have not set a default, it opens the most recently updated dashboard you can see.

The starting page

If no dashboard is open, you see a page headed Create or select a dashboard with two cards and, underneath, the line Or open an existing dashboard followed by buttons for up to eight of your dashboards.

A dashboard with no widgets

A dashboard that has no widgets yet shows Get Started by Configuring Your First Dashboard! with a Configure Dashboard button. The button opens the dashboard in edit mode so you can add widgets.

Finding and Opening a Dashboard

From the picker

1. Click the dashboard picker at the top left.
2. Read the list. It is divided into Selected Dashboard (the one open now), Default Dashboard (your default, if you have set one) and All Dashboards (the six most recently updated).
3. Click a dashboard to open it.

Clicking the dashboard that is already open closes it and returns you to the starting page.

From the full list

1. Click the dashboard picker, then click Show All Dashboards at the bottom of the list.
2. The Select Dashboard window opens. Use the All, Public and Private chips to narrow the list by type.
3. Type in Search dashboards... to search by name.
4. Use the page numbers at the bottom to move through the list. Six dashboards are shown per page.
5. Click a dashboard card to open it. Click Close to leave without choosing.

Each card shows the dashboard's name, its description (or No description available) and its type icon. If nothing matches, the window reads No dashboards found matching your search.

Creating a Dashboard from Templates

Navigation: Sidebar → Dashboard → Create → Dashboard

You can also reach this page from the Create dashboard using Template card on the starting page.

The Create dashboard page has Dashboard details on the left and Widgets on the right.

1. In Title, type a name. This field is required.
2. In Description, optionally describe the dashboard. The limit is 500 words.
3. Under Dashboard Type, click Private Dashboard or Public Dashboard. Private is selected by default.
4. On the right, choose the widgets to include. This step is optional. See the table below for the two tabs.
5. Click a widget card, or tick its checkbox, to select it. Click it again to deselect it.
6. To change how a template widget is drawn before you add it, click Modify on its card, choose the x-Axis, y-Axis and Chart Type, and click away to close the panel.
7. Click Create dashboard at the top right. The button reads Creating... while it works.

Interno confirms with Dashboard created successfully. and opens the new dashboard in edit mode so you can arrange it. Click Save Changes when you have finished arranging.

The two tabs appear once your organisation has at least one saved widget. Before that, only the template widgets are shown. Each tab shows ten widgets per page.

Selecting widgets is optional. You can create the dashboard empty and add widgets afterwards in edit mode.

The Create menu

The Create button lists everything you can create from the Dashboard page.

Arranging a Dashboard (Edit Mode)

Navigation: Sidebar → Dashboard → open the dashboard → ⋮ → Edit Dashboard

Edit mode shows the dashboard name with a pencil icon, a Widgets: selector, and the Auto Layout and Save Changes buttons. Opening edit mode needs defence:dashboard:update.

Add or remove widgets with the selector

1. Click the Widgets: selector. It shows how many widgets are on the dashboard, for example 4 widgets selected.
2. The Select Widgets window opens with every saved widget, 24 per page, newest first.
3. Type in Search widgets... to search by name.
4. Click a widget card to select it. Click a selected card to deselect it.
5. To select or clear everything on the current page, tick or untick the checkbox at the top left (tooltip Select all visible widgets).
6. To undo the choices you have made in this window, click Reset.
7. Click Apply Changes.

New widgets are placed at the top left of the grid. Move them where you want them, or click Auto Layout.

If you hold defence:widget:create, the window also has an Add Widget button that takes you to the widget query builder to create a brand-new widget.

Move and resize widgets

1. To move a widget, click and hold anywhere on its card and drag it to a new position. The other widgets shift to make room.
2. To resize a widget, drag the handle at its bottom-right corner.
3. To tidy the grid, click Auto Layout. Interno packs the widgets into the available space without overlaps, keeping their sizes.

The grid is six columns wide on a wide window. On a narrower window the widgets reflow into three, two or one column for viewing only, and moving, resizing and Auto Layout are switched off. When that happens, edit mode shows Widen the window to rearrange widgets. Widen the browser window to continue.

Edit or remove a single widget

Each widget card in edit mode has two icons at the top right.

To remove a widget, click the remove icon and then Confirm Remove. The widget leaves the grid, but the change is applied only when you save the dashboard. Removing a widget from a dashboard does not delete the widget; it stays in the Query Library.

Rename the dashboard or change its type

1. In edit mode, click the pencil icon next to the dashboard name.
2. The Update Dashboard window opens. Change the Title (required), the Description (optional, up to 500 words) or the Dashboard Type (Private Dashboard or Public Dashboard).
3. Click Update. The button reads Updating... while it saves.

This change is saved immediately. It does not wait for Save Changes.

Save your arrangement

1. Click Save Changes. The button reads Saving... while it works.
2. Interno confirms that the dashboard was updated and returns you to the dashboard in view mode.

Adding, removing, moving and resizing widgets are saved only when you click Save Changes. The button appears only if you hold defence:dashboard:update.

The unsaved-changes warning

If you try to go to another page in Interno while edit mode holds changes you have not saved, an Unsaved changes window opens: You have unsaved changes on this dashboard. If you leave now, they will be lost.

Closing or reloading the browser tab with unsaved changes triggers your browser's own leave-page prompt instead.

Global Filters

Global Filters applies the same conditions to every widget on the open dashboard, so you can scope a whole dashboard without editing each widget.

Add a filter to the dashboard

Navigation: Sidebar → Dashboard → open the dashboard → Global Filters

1. Click Global Filters. The Global Filters window opens with the note Choose from all available filters. Once you apply these filters the data in the dashboard will change accordingly.
2. Click Add New. The Add new filter panel opens.
3. In Table, choose the data table the filter applies to.
4. In Column, choose the field to filter on.
5. To add another filter in the same step, click Add another filter and repeat. To remove the last row, click the delete icon at its right.
6. Click Done. The button reads Saving... while it works. Click Cancel to close the panel without adding anything.

The filter now appears in the Global Filters window as a field labelled with the column name. It is saved as part of the dashboard, so it is there the next time you open the dashboard, and it needs defence:dashboard:update. If no filter has been added yet, the window reads No filters available.

Set values and apply

1. Click Global Filters.
2. Set a value on each filter you want to use. The kind of field depends on the column, as shown in the table below.
3. Click Apply. The window closes and every widget reloads.
4. To clear every value in the window, click Reset, then Apply.

See what is applied

When at least one filter has a value, the Global Filters button turns green. Hover over it to see Applied Filters (n) with each filter and its value. With nothing set it reads No filters applied.

Remove a filter from the dashboard

1. Click Global Filters.
2. Click the delete icon (tooltip Remove Filter) next to the filter.
3. In the Delete Filter window, click Confirm Delete. The filter is removed from the dashboard for everyone who can see it.

What to know about global filters

• A filter changes only the widgets whose query reads the table the filter belongs to. Other widgets are unaffected.
• The filters themselves belong to the dashboard. The values you set are remembered in your browser, per dashboard, so a colleague opening the same public dashboard sets their own values.
• Your browser remembers values for the 20 dashboards you filtered most recently. Values for older dashboards are cleared.

Filtering a Single Widget

Every widget on a dashboard, except card widgets, has a filter icon at the top right of its card. It filters that widget only, for the current visit.

1. Open the dashboard in view mode (not edit mode).
2. Click the filter icon on the widget. The Filters panel opens, listing every field of the tables the widget reads.
3. Set values on the fields you want. Text and number fields offer a searchable list of values found in your data.
4. Click Apply. The widget reloads with the filter applied.
5. To clear the panel, click Reset and then Apply. Click Cancel to close it without changing anything.

When a widget has filters applied, its filter icon turns green; hover over it to see Applied Filters (n).

A widget filter replaces the dashboard's global filters for that widget while it is set, and it is not saved. It is cleared when you reload the page or leave the dashboard.

Setting a Default Dashboard

Navigation: Sidebar → Dashboard → open the dashboard → ⋮ → Set As Default

Interno confirms with Default set successfully. From then on the dashboard opens first whenever you go to the Dashboard page, and it is listed under Default Dashboard in the picker.

• The default is personal. Each user has one default, chosen from their own private dashboards.
• Set As Default is greyed out when the open dashboard is already your default, or when it is a public dashboard.
• Setting a new default replaces the previous one.

Exporting and Importing

Export a dashboard

Navigation: Sidebar → Dashboard → open the dashboard → ⋮ → Export Dashboard

Your browser downloads a .json file named after the dashboard. Use it as a backup, or to copy the dashboard to another organisation or environment.

The file contains the dashboard's name and description, its widgets (their queries and chart settings) and the grid layout. It does not contain the dashboard's global filters, and it does not contain any of your data.

Import a dashboard

Navigation: Sidebar → Dashboard → ⋮ → Import Dashboard

1. Click Import Dashboard. The Upload JSON window opens.
2. Drop the file onto the upload area, or click the area and choose the file. Only .json files are accepted.
3. Check the file name shown under the upload area. Click the cross on it to remove the file and choose another.
4. Click Import. The button reads Importing... while it works.

Interno confirms with Dashboard imported successfully and opens the imported dashboard in edit mode. Arrange it if you wish and click Save Changes.

What an import creates:

• a new private dashboard that is not your default, whatever the original was
• a new copy of every widget in the file, saved to the Query Library
• the original grid layout

The widgets run against the data of the organisation you import into. A widget that reads a table this organisation does not have shows no data until the matching integration is connected.

Deleting a Dashboard

Navigation: Sidebar → Dashboard → open the dashboard → ⋮ → Delete Dashboard

1. Click Delete Dashboard.
2. In the Delete Confirmation window (Are you sure you want to delete this dashboard?), click Confirm Delete.

The dashboard is deleted and you return to the starting page. Deleting a dashboard cannot be undone. Its widgets are not deleted; they stay in the Query Library and can be added to other dashboards.

Troubleshooting

The Dashboard page keeps sending me to Integrations → Interno has no collected data yet. Connect an integration and wait for its first scan to finish. See How to Configure Connectors/Integrations.

The Dashboard page shows an unauthorised screen → You do not hold defence:dashboard:view. Ask your administrator.

The Create button is missing → You hold none of defence:dashboard:create, defence:widget:create or defence:query:create.

An option is missing from the Create or ⋮ menu → Each option is shown only if you hold its permission. See the tables above.

"No dashboard selected!" → You chose Edit Dashboard, Delete Dashboard or Set As Default with no dashboard open. Open a dashboard from the picker first.

"Unable to export!" → Export Dashboard works on the dashboard that is drawn on screen. Open a dashboard and try again. A dashboard with no widgets shows the Configure Dashboard page instead of a grid; add at least one widget and save before exporting.

Creating or renaming a dashboard is refused because the name already exists → Private dashboard names must be unique among your own dashboards, and public dashboard names must be unique across the organisation. Choose a different name.

"Failed to create widgets." → One of the template widgets you selected could not be copied. Deselect template widgets one at a time to find the one that fails, create the dashboard without it, and contact support.

Import shows "No file available!" → No file is attached. Drop a .json file onto the upload area before clicking Import.

Import shows "Something went wrong!" → The file is not a dashboard export, or it has been edited and is no longer valid. Export the dashboard again from the source and import the fresh file.

I cannot drag or resize widgets → Moving and resizing work only in edit mode (⋮ → Edit Dashboard) and only on a wide window. If you see Widen the window to rearrange widgets, make the browser window wider.

Auto Layout is greyed out → The dashboard has no widgets, or the window is too narrow.

My layout changes disappeared → Layout changes are saved only by Save Changes. If you left edit mode by choosing Discard changes, they were dropped.

A global filter changed nothing on some widgets → A filter affects only widgets whose query reads the filter's table. Open the widget in the query builder to see which table it reads.

The Global Filters button is not there → It is shown only while a dashboard is open.

My filter values are gone → Filter values are remembered in your browser only. They do not follow you to another browser or device, and they are cleared for dashboards beyond the 20 you filtered most recently.

Set As Default is greyed out → The dashboard is already your default, or it is a public dashboard. Only private dashboards can be a default.

A colleague cannot see my dashboard → It is private. Open it in edit mode, click the pencil icon, choose Public Dashboard and click Update.

"You do not have permission to perform this action." → The action you clicked needs a permission you do not hold. Ask your administrator.
