How to Customize Widget Appearance & Colors in Interno

How to Customize Widget Appearance & Colors in Interno

This guide shows how to change the look of an Interno dashboard widget — its chart type and its colors — using either the quick editor on a dashboard or the full Widget Builder. For building a widget from data, see How to Build Custom Widgets and Dashboards.

Estimated time: 3–5 minutes
What you'll need: Dashboard edit access (the defence:dashboard:update permission)

Option 1 — Quick change on a dashboard widget (chart type & axes)

Use this for fast tweaks without opening the full builder.

  1. Open the dashboard and hover over the widget you want to change.
  2. Click the gear (Change Preview) icon in the widget's top-right corner.
  3. In the small panel, adjust the x-Axis (category field), y-Axis (value field), and Chart Type.
  4. Click Apply Changes.

Note: The quick editor changes the chart type and axes. To change colors, use the Widget Builder (Option 2).

Option 2 — Full appearance in the Widget Builder (chart type + colors)

1. Open the Widget Builder

  • To create a new widget: on a dashboard click Create > Widget.
  • Build a query (choose a Source and Select fields, optionally add Aggregation/Group/Order), then click Preview so a visualization renders on the right.

2. Choose the chart type

In the Visualization panel, use the Chart Type dropdown. Available types include Table, Bar, Horizontal-Bar, Grouped-Bar, Grouped-Horizontal-Bar, Polar-Bar, Pie, Doughnut, Semi-Doughnut, and more (14+ types).

Tip: Colors apply to chart types — not to the Table view. Switch to a chart (e.g. Bar) first to see the color options.

3. Change the colors

  1. With a chart type selected, click the round color palette icon next to the Chart Type dropdown.
  2. In the popover, pick a ready-made palette from the palette dropdown — options include Default Palette, Corporate Blue, Dark Purple, and others.
  3. Click Apply. The chart redraws in the new colors. Use Reset to revert.

4. (Optional) Create your own color palette

  1. In the color popover, click + Add New Palette.
  2. In Create New Palette, add colors one at a time — pick a color with the swatch or type a hex code (e.g. #2563EB), then click Add Color to Palette.
  3. A palette requires a minimum of 8 colors (the preview shows how many remain).
  4. Click Create Palette. Your palette now appears in the palette dropdown — select it and click Apply.

5. Save

Click Create Widget (top-right of the Visualization panel) to save the widget with its chart type and colors. Add it to a dashboard via Edit Dashboard if needed.
